New technology is being rolled out to improve the MOT testing process in order to increase the reliability and accuracy of MOT tests by eliminating human error.

The evolution of MOT testing continues, with cutting-edge technology now streamlining the process to increase reliability and precision. This leap forward aims to eliminate human error, ensuring MOT tests are more accurate.
The introduction of connected testing equipment marks a significant milestone in MOT testing procedures. This innovative technology automates the recording of test results, a vast improvement over the previous manual entry system that was susceptible to errors, fraud, and was time consuming.
This updated equipment ensures data is captured and recorded automatically, significantly reducing the risk of human error whilst speeding up the MOT testing process. While the time saved per test might only be seconds, it represents an efficiency gain for both customers and MOT garages over time. This improvement not only enhances customer satisfaction by reducing wait times but also enables garages to increase their service capacity.
One of the reasons for the introduction of this new, self-recording testing equipment is the need to ensure MOT tests can keep up with the advances in the automotive industry. As vehicles become more and more automated and computer driven, MOT tests need to be updated in order to keep these vehicles safe. The Gov.uk website claims this will ‘involve creating a fully integrated, digital MOT service fit for the 21st century.’
The new technology, which includes connected roller brake testers, emissions analysers, decelerometers and headlight testers, were trialed at a Test Centre in Deptford. The authorised examiner designated manager for the site, Ian Wills, is in favor of the new technology, saying ‘using this equipment gives us more accurate results, direct onto the MTS System making it quicker for our testers and customers alike; both critical factors in our business success’. He goes on to say, ‘we are always seeking ways to reduce workloads on our testers and with the equipment now being connected, it removes any ambiguity, ensuring safer vehicles for our customers.’
As vehicles become more sophisticated, incorporating electric and hybrid technologies, MOT testing is evolving to keep up. The latest testing equipment is designed to accurately assess the unique features of these advanced vehicles, ensuring they meet safety and environmental standards. This forward-thinking approach ensures that no matter how technologically advanced your vehicle is, it can be properly tested and certified for roadworthiness, keeping you safe and compliant.
The future of MOT testing holds even more promise, with potential developments like artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) on the horizon. These technologies could revolutionise how tests are conducted, from predictive maintenance to more detailed inspections, ensuring even greater levels of safety and efficiency.
