Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is the hydraulic fluid used in vehicles fitted with automatic gearboxes. It lubricates moving components, transfers the hydraulic pressure needed to select gears, and regulates temperature to prevent overheating. Without it, an automatic gearbox would fail within minutes. ATF is not the same as engine oil. The two have different formulations, viscosities, and purposes, and should never be substituted for one another.

There are several indicators that your transmission fluid is overdue for attention:

• Dark or burnt-smelling fluid rather than the usual red or pink colour.
• Rough, sluggish, or jerky gear changes, particularly under acceleration.

A fluid change drains the accessible fluid from the sump but leaves a proportion of old fluid behind in the torque converter and cooler lines. A flush uses a machine to push new fluid through the entire system, exchanging close to 100% of the old fluid. The flush method is more thorough.

In some vehicles, the transmission dipstick is accessible and topping up is straightforward.
