If your tyres are below the legal tread limit, you could face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points - per tyre! To avoid the possibility of a £10,000 fine and losing your driving licence, it’s vital to inspect your tyres regularly. Our experts at Sunrise Servicing recommend checking them every two weeks and before long journeys.
What is the legal tyre tread limit?
In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. However, many experts believe this is insufficient, as the stopping distance increases dramatically, by as much as 44%, once the tread falls below 3mm. It can be difficult to judge tread depth accurately just by looking but there is a simple trick that lets you know if you need new tyres or not - all you need is a 20p coin.
Checking your tyre’s tread depth
Simply take the 20p coin and insert it into the groove of each of your tyres in turn. If the coin’s outer rim (the band around the edge with writing on) disappears, then your tyre is well above the legal limit. However, if you can see any of the outer rim then your tyre may be unsafe and illegal, putting yourself, your passengers and other road users at risk.
If this is the case, you need to bring your car to Sunrise Service Centre as soon as possible so our experienced mechanics can check your tyre(s) and advise you on your best course of action. If we find you do need a new tyre, we can supply and fit it for you there and then.
